Five Questions to Keep Kids Safe at School

Ask these questions wherever kids learn and play, like schools, libraries, churches, community centers, and more.

1. Who is making sure facilities are safe?

Wherever your kids spend time—like school, playgrounds, and afterschool programs—should have someone in charge of ensuring safety assessments are done. Ask who the person is and how to reach them.

2. When was the last safety assessment of the school done and what did they find?

Well-maintained physical structures—like buildings, fences and gates, and play areas—are fundamental, but assessments of their safety aren’t always mandated or done regularly. Ask when a safety check was last done and follow up until you get answers.

3. Are there any current safety hazards and what is being done to address them?

Knowing what hazards exist and what is being done to fix them is critical. Ask questions to make sure action is being taken to maintain a safe environment.

4. What emergency protocols exist if a child is injured?

Effective emergency protocols include clear actions and defined roles. Communication is also key, including procedures for contacting first responders and parents.

5. How are staff trained to look out for safety hazards?

Safety is a mindset. Schools who proactively safety-train their staff are equipping them with skills to prevent accidents and respond effectively if they do.
