Ready, Set, Safe! Urges Governors to Act on U.S. CPSC Gate Safety Recommendations
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Ready, Set, Safe! applauds Acting Chairman Peter Feldman and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission for urging governors across the country to help prevent injuries and deaths caused by improperly installed and maintained manual gates in his letter dated September 4, 2026.
“Every child should be safe around the gates they encounter in their daily lives, whether at school, at a playground, at home, or in their community,” said Eric Quanbeck, co-founder of Ready, Set, Safe!. “We know firsthand what can happen when a dangerous gate goes unnoticed. The CPSC’s leadership will help bring this preventable hazard to the attention of the state and local officials who can act to protect children and families.”
Ready, Set, Safe! has helped lead the effort to strengthen gate safety standards and building codes, working alongside industry partners including the American Fence Association and the Door & Access Systems Manufacturers Association. That work helped secure updated ASTM International standards and their inclusion in four of the International Code Council’s 2027 model codes.
“These standards and model code provisions give state and local leaders a clear path to prevent gate-related injuries and deaths,” said Samantha Lasky, Executive Director of Ready, Set, Safe!. “Now we must turn them into protections in every community. We look forward to working with governors to advance adoption and implementation of simple, inexpensive safety features that save lives.”

The organization was founded following the death of seven-year-old Alex Quanbeck, who was killed when a large gate fell on him during recess at his elementary school.
